It’s not just annoying. A running toilet can waste several gallons of water per hour. If it runs all night, you’re looking at a serious spike in your water bill. Beyond that, it can signal a bigger issue lurking in your plumbing system - one that’s best not ignored.

The good news is you don’t have to lose another wink of sleep over it. In this brief article brought to you by Mr. Rooter Plumbing, we guide you on how to stop that toilet from running all night and how to keep it from starting again.

If you'd rather have a plumber handle the issue, then call or message Mr. Rooter Plumbing. Our live representatives and dedicated plumbers are always ready to help.

Why Toilets Run in the First Place

Toilets are simple machines, but they have many components. Like in any system, things wear down. In essence, a running toilet is due to water leaking from the tank into the bowl. It triggers the refill mechanism to kick on over and over again. It’s like your toilet is trying to flush a ghost.

The usual suspects include:

  • A worn flapper valve that no longer seals properly.
  • A misadjusted float that lets water rise too high and spill into the overflow tube.
  • A faulty fill valve that doesn’t shut off like it should.

These are NOT the only reasons. For instance, a crack in the toilet tank could also cause leaks.

Midnight Fixes You Can Try Right Now

If your toilet starts running after everyone’s in bed and you’re not in the mood for a full toilet repair session, then here are a few quick fixes to get through the night:

  • Jiggle the Handle: Yes, it sounds old-school, but it often works. A stuck chain or a flapper that didn’t settle can sometimes be reset with a quick jiggle. If the sound stops, you’ve bought yourself some time until morning.
  • Turn Off the Water Supply: Look behind the toilet for the small valve near the floor. Turn it clockwise to shut off the water flow to the tank. The toilet won’t run (or flush), but at least it’ll stop making noise—and wasting water.
  • Lift the Tank Lid and Check the Flapper: Peek inside the tank and see if the rubber flapper at the bottom is sealed tightly. Sometimes they get stuck open. Push it down gently and see if that doesn't do the trick.

Morning Game Plan: The Real Fix

Once daylight rolls around and you’re ready to solve the problem for good, consider these solutions:

  • Inspect the Flapper Valve. Over time, the flapper warps or gets grimy enough to prevent a clean seal. If that's the case, then turn off the water supply, drain the tank by flushing, and unclip the old flapper. Bring it with you to the hardware store and replace it with a matching part. It’s an easy and affordable fix.
  • Adjust the Float. If the float is set too high, water spills into the overflow tube. For a ball float, gently bend the arm downward. For a column-style float, twist the adjustment screw to lower the water level.
  • Replace the Fill Valve. If the toilet keeps filling and never seems to stop, the fill valve may be failing. Fix: You can buy a universal fill valve kit and install it in under an hour. Most come with clear instructions.

Keep Calm and Call Mr. Rooter

Sometimes, despite your best efforts, that toilet just won’t cooperate. Maybe the parts are too worn, the tank has a hairline crack, or the water won’t shut off no matter what. That’s when it’s time to bring in a professional.

The professionals at Mr. Rooter Plumbing are always ready to deliver quick and affordable plumbing repair service. Call or message us now to get in touch with a dedicated member of our team.
