It’s a question we hear a lot here at Mr. Rooter Plumbing: “Can you unclog a drain with salt?” The idea of pouring a scoop of table salt into your drain and watching it clear away gunk sounds almost too good to be true. Well, here’s the straight answer: Yes, you can try to unclog a drain with salt... but its effectiveness is limited.

Salt - especially combined with hot water or baking soda - might help break down minor grease or soap buildup, but it’s far from a magic bullet. It’s like using a butter knife when you really need a jackhammer. For light residue, it might do the trick. For anything more stubborn, it simply won't cut it.

In this brief article brought to you by Mr. Rooter Plumbing, we break down what salt can do, when it falls short, and what alternatives you can try before calling in the big guns - like Mr. Rooter's hydro jetting drain cleaning.

Salt and Hot Water: A Basic Fix for a Minor Mess

If you’ve just noticed a drain running a little slow, then a salt flush is a harmless way to start tackling the issue. Pour about half a cup of table salt into the drain, then chase it with boiling water. Let it sit for a few minutes and follow with more hot water to rinse.

This can help dislodge greasy residue that’s just starting to accumulate, but don't expect miracles. If the water’s still pooling, the clog is probably too advanced for salt alone.

Baking Soda and Vinegar: A Slightly Stronger Combo

For a slightly more aggressive homemade approach, try mixing baking soda followed by vinegar. Sprinkle about half a cup of baking soda down the drain and follow it with half a cup of vinegar. Let it sit for at least 30 minutes or until the fizzing stops. Then, pour hot (but not boiling) water down the drain to flush it.

The chemical reaction between baking soda and vinegar can help break down gunk, minor blockages, and bad odors. It’s not industrial strength, but it can help maintain drains and tackle very mild clogs.

When DIY Isn’t Enough: Try This First

If the homemade methods aren’t doing the trick, keep calm and refuse the chemical drain cleaners. While they may offer temporary relief, the harsh chemicals often do more harm than good. They can corrode your pipe and cause serious long-term damage.

Instead, consider one of the most plumber-recommended methods for tackling mild to moderate clogs: a drain snake or auger. You can pick up a manual or powered version at a hardware store. If you’re comfortable using one, then great! If not - or if the clog keeps coming back - then it’s time to stop spinning your wheels and call in the pros.

Bring in the Big Guns: Hydro Jetting Drain Cleaning

When the backups persist or keep returning, then there’s a reason. You’re likely dealing with a deep clog, severe buildup, or tree root invasion that homemade methods just can’t reach. That’s where hydro jetting comes in.

At Mr. Rooter Plumbing, we employ professional hydro-jetting equipment to blast away stubborn clogs with high-pressure water. Think of it like a pressure washer for your pipes. It scours the inner walls of your plumbing with special nozzles.

Despite its intense power, hydro jetting is:

  • Safe for most modern plumbing systems
  • Environmentally friendly (no harsh chemicals!)
  • Extremely effective at restoring full flow
  • Offers a long-term solution to recurring drain problems

If you’re running a restaurant, a salon, or any business with heavy water usage, then hydro jetting can keep your plumbing system running clean and reliably. Call Mr. Rooter if you have any questions or concerns for a plumber. We're always happy to help.
